“What is King of Thieves?”
King of Thieves (or just KoT) is a mobile platformer game that combines tower defense and PVP multiplayer components into one unique mix. Dodge traps and steal gold from other players to become the wealthiest thief in the world!
“How do I play KoT?”
The game is currently available for iOS devices, and Android devices. It can be found on the App Store, Amazon App Store, or Google Play Store.
Once you’ll install and launch the game, it will guide you through all the basics.
If you can't play KoT because of some technical issues, please check out this Troubleshooting QnA.
“Do I have to pay for this game?”
No, you can download and play the game for free. Additional in-game currency can be purchased for real money, but you can always earn it by completing missions, winning leagues and wars, and breaking locks. To restrict in-app purchases, simply adjust the settings on your device.
“What’s the goal of the game?”
The ultimate goal is to become the wealthiest thief in the world by collecting the most valuable gems. You can obtain gems from mines, but the most efficient way to get them is through stealing them from each other. Stealing in KoT is not considered a bad thing; is is more like a national sport here.
However, it’s not enough to just collect the best gems – it’s also very important to defend them from other players.
“How can I better defend my dungeon?”
1) Upgrade your Lock to increase the number of fake keyholes it has. This will make it more difficult for attackers to break into your dungeon.
2) Upgrade your traps to increase their attack damage. Attackers will lose more health with each death and eventually may even leave your dungeon empty-handed.
3) Use Edit Mode to design the best defense for your dungeon, or buy the pre-made design for your dungeon with the best defense right out of the box.
4) Upgrade your Gem Defense Chance to lower the attacker's chances of stealing the gem from your Totem.
“How can I move to another dungeon?”
You must complete all rituals in your current dungeon before moving on to the next one. The teeth in the Totem’s mouth represent the amount or remaining rituals. Once the last tooth is gone, you will have to move to a new totem in order to continue perform rituals.
“How can I get more gold?”
1) Upgrade your Gold Mine Capacity and production speed. Your Gold Mine will bring you a steady revenue.
2) Upgrade your Skull Gold Bonus to get more coins for collecting skulls left by other players in your dungeon. This is especially effective when you have a good defense.
3) Use the Golden Blaze outfit (or any other outfits with the Steal Gold Bonus) to steal more gold from other players.
4) Use the Skip button in multiplayer mode to find an opponent with a large amount of gold in his chest.
5) Compete in leagues for larger coin rewards.
“How can I improve my rating (total gems value)?”
1) Steal gems from other players. Use the Lucky Face outfit (or any other outfits with the Gem Steal Chance Bonus) to improve your chance of stealing the gem from another player's Totem.
2) Upgrade your outfits to increase their Health bonus. This will provide you more attempts to crack the defenses of your enemies.
3) Unlock the Gem Mines on the map, which produce gems. Each land has one Gem Mine. Distant mines produce better gems, but take more time.
4) Team up with your Facebook friends and guild mates, and help retrieve each other’s stolen gems.
“How can I get more orbs?”
1) You can get more orbs by completing missions, winning leagues and wars, and breaking open locks.
2) You receive 5 orbs with every level up.
3) You can always buy more orbs in the shop.
“What is the HP bar needed for? My thief dies each time he touches a trap!”
Each time your thief touches a trap, the HP is decreased depending on the level of that particular trap. After a certain percentage of your HP is depleted, you will have one less star. This means less gold in the chest and a lower chance of stealing a gem from the totem. You can increase your HP by crafting and upgrading your outfits.
“What do I need those green potions at the bottom of the dungeon screen for?”
Potions are useful to make it through a dungeon with less blood and tears. You can find them in locks, or earn them by completing rituals with all gems of the same color.
There are 5 kinds of potions:
1) Gang of Thieves – magically clones your character, allowing you to sneak through tricky sets of traps and confuse seeker birds and homing cannons.
2) Slow motion – slows time down, making it easier to find the perfect timing for jumps.
3) Ghost – shows you the ghost of the dungeon’s owner getting to the chest so you know the right path to take
4) Disable Trap – randomly disables one of the traps in the dungeon
5) Double Gold – doubles the amount of gold earned from the chest….if you manage to reach it.
“Are there any other ways to complete dungeons more easily?”
Yes, actually there is a way. After 7 deaths in a dungeon, the trap that inflicted the most damage is disabled.
“After moving, I can choose a trap set to install. Why should I pay hundreds or thousands of gold or orbs for other trap sets? They don't look too impressive.”
Expensive sets of traps come with harder and more advanced pre-made level designs, especially the third one. In many cases you can design a strong defense using basic traps, but it requires plenty of time and skill.
“If I buy a set of traps, will they apply to the next dungeon?”
No, traps only apply to the current dungeon.
“If I upgrade a trap, would that upgrade apply to all traps of the same kind in my dungeons?”
Yes. You do not upgrade a specific trap, but rather, a whole set of traps. If you have two of the same trap, both would upgrade at once.
“What advantages do these outfits give to a player?”
Outfits increase these stats:
2) Chance to steal a gem.
3) Chance to pick the best gem available on a Totem.
4) Amount of gold you can steal from opponent.
“Where can I get the ingredients to craft and upgrade the outfits?”
You receive ingredients for each completed Totem ritual.
“Why should I complete my own dungeon twice in a row?”
This is meant to make all dungeons passable and fair for everyone. Completing a dungeon once can be an accident. Completing it twice in a row provides assurance that it can be completed by other mortals.
“How does the ‘Retrieve’ function work?”
It allows you to recruit your Facebook friends to retrieve the gems stolen from you, and for guild members to help out their friends and get their gems back for them. Those gems are copies of the ones stolen from you, because their new owners could already have sold them or combine them with other gems before you get it back.
“Can somebody steal gems from my Totem slots if I didn’t start a ritual?”
No, your gems are safe. However, it is usually a good idea to put gems into the Totem and keep the ritual running in order to progress through the game.
"How do leagues work?"
The way leagues work are simple, all you have to do is be in the top 3 positions of your current league when your tournament ends (a timer is shown when viewing the leaderboard) and you'll advance to the next league. Advancing isn't always the best option, however, as you can't be demoted a league, so staying in a league for a while can be profitable. The final league, the champion’s league, works a little differently. In the champion’s league, your position is determined by your rise in gem count, not the amount of gems you have. This puts everyone on an equal playing field.
"What happens when you break your final totem?!"
Do not fear, you will not lose any progress due to not being able to go further, you will just be placed in a random dungeon which you have previously occupied, it may have the same old layout, or a new one, but all will have 3 totem slots in them. You will never run out of totems to mix your gems in!
"Are trap upgrades permanent?"
Yes! Fortunately, they are. Whenever you get a base, if you've had the trap before and upgraded it, you'll have the same level as before, same goes for the gold mine, character and all upgrades!
"Are there any requirements I need to move out of my dungeons?"
Yes, there are a few things you have to do before you will be allowed to move. First of all, you must finish all the teeth of your totem. One tooth disappears each time you finish a ritual. When you finish all the teeth, the totem breaks and you can move on, but not before that. Second, you must have enough gold or orbs to buy a trap set in the new dungeon. If you cannot afford any trap set, you will have to save up gold until you can to move on. Third, you must complete enough single player levels to unlock the next totem. After completing a certain number of single player levels, you gain access to new totems. However, if you don't do these levels, you will have to stay behind in your old totem.
“Can I be raided while I am online?”
No, you have to disconnect from the game to be attacked.
"Can I post a picture on this forum?"
Again, yes, yes you can! And again, Menta comes to the rescue with another useful thread! I'd recommend reading it here! Have fun posting pictures of your best raids, best defences and highest gem caches!
"What should I do if a see a hacked base?"
NEVER report it on the forum, it's against forum rule number 7, and you will be punished for it and your thread will be no more. If you wish for us to look into a hacked base, then PM any member of staff or email the support desk at email@example.com and it'll be dealt with, but never report it publicly, we don't want exploits spreading.
"Are the spambots gone after their huge wave in March 2015?"
Spam will always be a problem on every forum, but we managed to find the loophole they were using and minimised the amount of them that are here, if we see them, they're dealt with immediately, if not, feel free to use the report function. Never reply to them, though! That just makes them an active to of conversation and doesn't contribute to the positive forum ethos!
"What are guilds actually for?"
Numerous things, sometimes to be community oriented! You can try your best to be a collaborative, unstoppable force to rise to the top like the predecessors of the number one spot! All hail! Also, there are Guild Wars - show other guilds your almighty power as one quadrant and smash them in your rising gem count over the course of three days!
"How often can a guild participate in battle?"
Every 72 hours, meaning you can expect a new one every league! Hoo hah!
"How many players are needed to compete in a guild battle?"
You only need one! However, the reward is then lowered. One player is only able to proclaim a prize of 30 orbs, no matter how many people are in the guild. such as Cylence: http://forum.kingoft...y-of-one-guild/
How do I join a guild?
There is currently no guild search, but there are a few ways to find a desired guild. If you are facebook friends with any of the guild members, you can view them in your friends list and join from there. You can also look at the top guilds list, which allows you to go down the list in increments of 50. Once you find the guild, you can click join and if there is any space you will become a new member.
"I need a better base, any ideas?"
There are a few ways to find a layout for your base. iPaolino had the brilliant idea of showing off some of the best bases in his website, found here, Cylence created a gallery of all his past layouts here, and you can view the KoTBuilder website here! Alternately. If you would like to design your own dungeon you can learn how to by reading another helpful guide by Cyclence, Dungeon Creation 101, here.
“Can I buy a platform?”
No, platforms are only available in certain bases
“Will my skulls ever disappear from my base?”
No, skulls are permanent. Unless you collect them or move out of your base, they will remain there indefinitely.
“Can I choose my layout?”
No, currently the layouts are chosen at random; you just have to go with whatever you get.
“What are the multipliers for the totems?”
The first totem will provide a 2x boost to your gems, the second a 1.5x boost, the third a 1.2x boost, and the fourth and beyond no boost.
"I disconnected while raiding and when I came back, I myself had been raided!"
When this happens, it's most likely due to your internet. The incongruities don't always lie within the game itself, but rather in your hands. Restart your internet, and then restart the game, see if it works, because if everyone else can connect, and you can't, chances are it's not anything to do with the servers or anything of the sort. There should be a 1-2 minute shield every time you log off to prevent this, but for now, just try the commonly recommended methods on every game and simply restart the internet and your device, this will surprisingly help with a ton of issues.
"Why can I only sometimes use advertisements to get free keys?"
The advertisements are dependent on your location, time zone and numerous other factors. You cannot always watch advertisements, and there won't always be the option to earn keys this way. There has to be a limit, or it'd be overpowered, but when you do have the option, it's a nice touch!
"Is it possible for me to use the same game on numerous devices?"
Yes, yes it is using iCloud. If you'd like to go here there is a step by step on just how you can do so, it's a useful addition to the game; and now you can access your extravagant dungeon here, there and everywhere!
"Is it possible to have an alternate account on the same device?
Why yes, yes it is. I won't go into detail, I'd much rather refer you to the ultimate, completely comprehensive guide on this specific subject by Blizzard, props to him! The guide is located here!
"Why don't I receive King of Thieves notifications?"
You have to accept them when you first get the game. If you can open up your game via iCloud in another device, and them delete and reinstall the app, you should get the option again. You must download the game signed out of iCloud then sign in after going on and enabling notifications to recover your data.
"Why didn’t I get to spin for an ingredient after my ritual finished?"
Yeah, this happens. You still will get an item; you won't, however, get the option to respin. Hopefully this will be addressed, as it's one of the most frequently asked questions on the forum; nevertheless, you don't actually lose out on your spin, you will have an extra material of some kind, so at least there's that to look forward to and you can know you're not actually losing out on anything.
"I keep losing my gems to people better than me, why is the matchmaking so unfair?"
Well, it's not perfect, but no game is. If you're going out on the attack to steal some gems and you find an opponent worse than you in defences, level and experience, you'd attack them - hands down, easy money, it's what every thief wants. If you want to prevent this upgrade your gem defence and your defences themselves.
"Why do the later totems not enhance your gem value?"
It's how it works, it just combines three to provide an extra slot to steal from, or it'd be too easy to get a high amount, however, if you add in three of the same coloured gem you will be provided with a boost of a potion dependent on the colour, for example three red gems would give you a potion to remove one random trap from the field, and 3 blue gems would give you a potion to spawn a gang of thieves!
"What do higher value gems look like, so I can spot them while raiding?"
The higher the gem value, the more detail it has, silver outlining is worth more than no lining, and gold is worth more than silver. Some good examples are on this thread: Gem values!
"Are the IAP’s unbalanced?"
Nope. They're not. The ingredients are just really expensive, they don't want numerous people to get the top outfits, it'll be annoyingly ridiculous to the lower level players, besides, you get a free one after every ritual, so nobody is forcing the IAP on you.
"What happens if I proclaim a gem of higher value than my other gems and my slots are full?"
When you get a gem from a raid, or your mines, and one is of lower value, the lower value one will automatically be turned in for gold and replaced in the slots by the higher value one. If you get a gem and it's of lower value than all your others and you have no free slots, the one you earned will be automatically traded in for gold.
“Can I steal from a specific person?”
At the moment, the matchmaking system is random, so you cannot choose who you attack. However, from your defense log you can revenge players and see their bases before you attack them.
"Why did you remove TST's in patch 2.1?"
The patch was to make things more balanced, triple spawn traps (TST) and some super jumps (SJ) we're too hard for new, casual and medium level players, and we got a lot of complaints about it. It was removed to balance things out and provide a level playing field for everyone.
“Can I buy a shield?”
No, currently shields can only be obtained if you are attacked.
“Why can people still attack when they have 0 HP?”
This is just the game works. You have many tries to save your base, and the raider has many tries to complete it.
“Which gem of mine will be stolen?”
The gem that is stolen is random, it is not predetermined. However, outfits with the Best Gem Steal Chance have a higher chance of taking your biggest gem.
“Does the time for rituals reach a limit?”
Yes. A ritual will never take longer than 12 hours. Once you reach this limit, all rituals from then on will take 12 hours, no more, no less.
